Chapter 13: Baby Steps

Charlottesville, Virginia, October 2014.

HOW COULD SEAN EVER FORGIVE HER? Yesterday he was ready to leave her on the side of the road. She didn’t blame him, really. After all, she did call him a pussy for grieving over the brutal murder of a woman he cared about. Did he love Gina? Was that it? It was no wonder he was so pissed off at her. Gina’s death was her fault. If it wasn’t for her, Cain wouldn’t be fixated on them. She had so much to answer for.

“Look, Ais, I’ve been thinking. Why don’t we forget yesterday happened? It was a shitty day all the way around.”

She whirled around in confusion. Was he serious? She expected to see his snarky expression, but he seemed sincere enough. His eyes were sad when they lingered on hers though. Something in them was flat. She’d rather see them burn with anger than this cool nothingness. He rubbed at a smudge on the window while waiting for her to answer. His heart wasn’t in it though; he smeared it into a bigger mess without noticing.

“Does this mean you’ll forgive me for being so ugly to you? I swear I didn’t mean what I said. If I could take it back, I would.” She reached out to stop him from turning the key. The second she cupped his hand, he stiffened. She snatched her hand back. Maybe he wasn’t ready to let it all go.

With a heavy sigh, he covered her hand with his, resting them on the console. “We have an hour before we need to meet the professor. I’m going to tell you something. I hope you can appreciate how important this is to me.”

Uh-oh. This couldn’t be good. He never spoke to her in full sentences without swearing. “Okay. Go ahead.”

He licked his lips and glanced around as he gathered his thoughts. “I’m still dealing with Gina’s murder. She was . . . important to me. I cared about her more than I have for anyone in a very long time.”

“You loved her?”

He flinched, and those eyes went dim again. She squeezed his hand until he returned the gesture. “I did. I did love her.”

“I envy you that. You’ve known love from so many people—Killian, Dec, Mica—and Gina.” She coughed to cover the sudden wistfulness in her voice before asking, “Why are you telling me this?”

Grasping for words, he dragged his fingers through his hair until the spiked ends stood straight up. “I want you to know what I’m thinking so you understand where my mind’s at. That sonofabitch has a lot of blood on his hands. Now he’s threatening to take our son. I’m not letting that happen. I’m going to hunt Irku down. If I can find a way to kill him, I’ll do it with a smile and have a big ass after party. There’s no room in this plan for sentimental bullshit from you. Can I count on you to back me up? Will you
